Sir Moments bound for Group 1 after latest victory
Jun 01, 2013
Young Brisbane trainer Steven O’Dea now has a great chance to claim his maiden Group 1 win after Choisir gelding Sir Moments took out Saturday’s Listed The Phoenix (1400m) at Eagle Farm.
The youngster took out the Listed Dalrello Stakes (1200m) at Doomben before recording his second consecutive stakes win in dynamic fashion.
Sir Moments settled at the back of the field for top jockey Michael Cahill before beginning his run around his opposition from the 600 metres.
The John O’Shea-trained filly Gypsy Diamond gave Sir Moments a race inside the final 200 metres but found her bigger rival too good in the closing stages.
O’Dea said Sir Moments would back in up in seven days’ time in the Group 1 JJ Atkins (formerly the TJ Smith Classic) over 1600 metres at Eagle Farm. The Eagle Farm horseman said he had no doubt Sir Moments would relish the mile.
"You saw today how he’s going to relish a mile, the big track suited him better today, it was really good to see,” O’Dea said.
"We’ve dodged the A-graders going towards the big race with the one target at the end which has been good because he’s been learning along the way.
"He’s out of a Zabeel mare so he’s got a bit of stamina on the dam side and the further the better.”
O’Dea teamed up with Proven Thoroughbreds founder Jamie Walter to buy Sir Moments for just $40,000 out of the Widden Stud draft at the 2012 Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale but has now returned more than $150,000 to connections.
Congratulations to Sir Moments’s owners - Proven Thoroughbreds (Mgr: A J Walter), M A Rolfe, Mrs M L Rolfe, S J Roberts, J A Peck, Mrs J A Peck, N D White, C J Boyd, J Gardiner, V G Corry, L H Foley, M A Fraser, D Cohen, B J James, H Goddard, M W Cook & B L Ashe, D J Tagge & J O'Neill.
