Soul Crusade marches to victory at Ipswich

Dec 07, 2012

Soul Crusade has produced a whirlwind finish to claim his first win for the Steven O’Dea stable in the K & R Reliance Worldwide Handicap (1350m) at Ipswich.

Soul Crusade had not won a race for O’Dea since joining the stable but the son of Lion Heart had raced in great heart, only finishing further back than fifth in his previous 11 starts before his deserved Ipswich success.

Geoffrey Goold partnered Soul Crusade in his latest outing with the new jockey combining with Soul Crusade with terrific effect.

Soul Crusade began moderately but mustered good pace to recover quickly, taking a midfield position for Goold before the field had travelled 200 metres.

Goold let Soul Crusade stride closer to the leaders approaching the home turn before switching him off the heels of the leaders with 300 metres to run.

The six-year-old switched up a gear as he found clear running to firstly reel in the leader before sprinting brilliantly over the final furlong to record an easy three-length victory.

Soul Crusade has performed strongly at distances up 2150 metres so is set to string a few successes together now O’Dea has him well enough to produce such a blistering turn of foot.

O’Dea was also the successful owner of Soul Crusade.
